Nanterre, a Mirrored Memory
Cheikh Djema
Documentary | France | 2006 | 50 min.

This documentary examines the story of Algerian and North-African immigrants in France, focusing on the first inhabitants of Nanterre's shantytowns and their children. The filmmaker, who lived in Nanterre before and after the Algerian civil war, unlocks memories of his family's story and the dramatic political struggle for control of this community by the two major Algerian nationalist organizations. The film also takes a look at the younger generation born in the shantytowns who are discovering their elders' history and have to navigate their own journeys of assimilation.
