Celebrating filmmakers from the Arab world and beyond, the Noor Awards will be presented on Opening Night at the Castro Theatre on October 16th. A jury composed of distinguished members of the film and academic communities select the winning film and AFF will award a cash prize to the director in four categories: Best Long Fiction ($2000), Best Long Non-Fiction ($2000), Best Short Fiction ($500), and Best Short Non-Fiction ($500). The Arab Film Festival's Board of Directors will also present a Lifetime achievement award honoring the work of the late Egyptian film director Youssef Chahine.

Beneath the surface of the Egyptian film industry, long considered the Hollywood of the Arab world, an independent Egyptian film movement is burgeoning. Made up of young filmmakers not afraid to take on the societal problems of their country headfirst, these four short films eschew melodrama for realism and offer a fresh way to view a country long captured on the silver screen.
